“I joined CMC after graduating from technical high school, which allowed me to gain knowledge for my future profession as an electrician so that I could start working immediately after I graduated. The salary I earn right after technical school is good as well as the benefits. The work atmosphere has been friendly ever since I started, everyone helps each other as much as possible. As a civil engineer, coming to a big company like CMC was a big move towards growing my career. Being an estimator, I’m the first step in fabricating rebar for our customers so I get to know about all the projects even before they happen. My goal is to become the lead estimator for my team and have us be the best at what we do. I love it here.”

Picasso. Matisse. Billy Rodriguez? New artists can come from anywhere. They just need the materials to get started. For over four decades, CMC has proudly sponsored the “Scrap Can Be Beautiful” program at the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas. This program provides scrap metal for students to create incredible works of art — like the amazing pieces below!
Toro Rojo
Toro Rojo is a bull constructed entirely out of scrap metal. The bull's neck is the only thing left of an old armchair. The top of the bull is an antique shoe cobbler. The ears are towing farmhouse hooks. It represents Texas and farm life. 
The Fire
I made a campfire out of scrap metal and surrounded the fire with twigs and logs. The piece is meant to resemble an active fire.
Hand Flowers
My main inspiration for this piece was nature. Throughout all time, my goal was to soften, make flexible, revitalize metal, and to show how tender flowers can be that are made out of metal.
Record Player
I like working with scrap metal and turning it into things... I tried to connect style with nostalgia and the idea of movement.
Texas Buffalo
The bison head was made of four layers of metal that were cut out witha plasma cutter and welded together with metal spacers between each layer. I chose to do a bison head because I love making art inspired by nature.
Face
The meaning behind this piece represents imperfections. No one's perfect, yet we still have a certain uniqueness to our facial features that make us.
Dragonfly
The dragonfly was my first attempt at constructing a metal sculpture using only long, thin metals. The wings are made of barbed wire and bolts from a wood spool. The dragonfly is my mom's native symbol.
